Balenciaga SS18

Demna Gvasalia’s Fresh Take on Spring

“I wanted it to be more Demna, less Cristóbal this time,” Balenciaga’s creative director Demna Gvasalia recently told Vogue.“Something more vicious. Gothic in a way.”

And that is what we have.  SS18 Balenciaga is strong and street-inspired, mixing and blending male and female tropes (men’s shirting, ladylike pencil skirts) and signals of power (sharp stilettos, strong shoulders). “Fashion is a reflection of the way we live. I wanted this feeling [that] something dangerous is going to happen,” said Demna.

Well-behaved women rarely make history, and the current Balenciaga collection is an homage to the rebel.

Balenciaga Newsprint Blouse & White Everyday Clutch

Fake news, makes news: Gvasalia has always had an eye for socio-political commentary. This season, he scanned currency, newspapers, stock screensavers and turned them into bold prints meant to be layered.  The newsprint shirt is this season’s signature look.

Street chic: The coder-classic hoodie turns ultra cool girl when it grows to gargantuan proportions. Demna’s vibrant accessories energize and elevate this everyday staple piece.

Soft and strong: Pretty pastels are in good company paired with strong-as-sunshine tones. Keep the juxtapositions going with big and bold accessories.

What’s my line? Stay undercover with Balenciaga’s take on the springtime staple, the trench. This season shows a provocative mix of elements, such as ultra-sporty guy-wear worn with negligee fabrics in turn worn with ladylike elements that put that sexy message into another sphere altogether. The blend is post-punk and utterly fresh and new.

Balenciaga SS18 is all about appropriation, bad-taste-into-chic provocation and humour. So, take men’s shirting and make it feminine by wearing it with lace, or make the boardroom staple into street art by mixing with punk-inspired accessories.

Be bold: Striking acid tones and oversized silhouettes are blended with delicate and ladylike fabrics to mix the message.
