THE OVERCOAT
The Season’s Best Coats

PHOTOGRAPHY BY TED BELTON

If there is one piece that makes your statement before you even walk in the room, it is the coat. The coat has always been a shape-shifter, rarely definitely feminine or masculine and so is an especially relevant starting point now, a time of gender fluidity, when fashion houses show boys and girls in interchangeable wardrobes heralding freedom from conventional dressing. This season offers a new kind of timelessness ⎯ classic shapes such as the trench, the anorak, the car coat, the parka, are re-imagined in high-tech or high-luxury fabrics, and are as androgynous as the era.

THE SHINING

Haider Ackermann uses a patent finish to add extra polish to a sports-inflected parka, signalling one of the strongest looks of the season.

MUTLI-TASKING

Haider Ackermann’s oversized anorak will easily slide over even the chunkiest sweaters, and does extra duty with a winter-proof lining and rain-proof polished finish.

THAT 70's COAT

The collegiate look that was such a love story in the current season’s favorite decade is updated with a relaxed shape in classic camel.

ONE FOR THE BOYS

Even grey days are sunnier when you’re wearing Sacai’s tomboy jacket that gleefully mixes a patchwork of stripes, checkers and colour.

URBAN ARMOUR

Ann Demeulemeester gives a military-inspired greatcoat a romantic twist with volume. Belted, it maintains its discipline; loosened it drapes as fluidly as a cape.
