As soon as there is a slight chill in the air our thoughts turn to tucking in – wrapping ourselves in great coats and cashmere, spending time in cozy company, dinner parties, slow cooking, great cocktails and conversation. We couldn’t think of a better person to share the mood than Kristen Vander Hoeven, who is passionate about food and fashion in equal measure. We talked to her about the best things to pack – in both the suitcase and picnic basket – for a perfect autumn weekend in the country.

WHAT IS ON YOUR FALL WISHLIST?
“I am in love with the Balenciaga wrap – it’s a great way to keep warm and cozy, and I love the pop of pattern.”

FAVOURITE SNACK?

“ This nutty crunchy popcorn with sesame glazed cashews is fantastic and can double as an appetizer with cocktails.”

WHAT DO YOU PACK FOR A WEEKEND AT THE COTTAGE?

Denim is always right in the country but I’m loving these Haider Ackermann pants – love the unfinished hem. Worn with a soft and enveloping cardigan, this to me is close to a perfect cottage uniform.

WE LOVE SPOONING & FORKING YOUR BLOG DEVOTED TO GREAT RECIPES AND ENTERTAINING IDEAS. WHAT IS YOUR SECRET TO THROWING A GOOD DINNER PARTY?

Hosting a dinner party in the fall has to be one of my favourites. The Harvest at this time feels so warm and cozy and lends a hand at making dishes bright and full of flavour. Gnocchi is one of those things you can get creative with by using different root vegtables like carrots or beets instead of regular white potatoes. There is nothing better than a bowl full of pasta, a goblet of red wine and the crisp air.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURTIE THINGS TO SERVE FOR BREAKFAST?

Prosecco! And probably something super unhealthy. Having an assortment of breads, preserves, fruit, yogurt and then something with lots of melted cheese and bacon obviously. I love having a full table, this way people can just graze and hang out. This is also a great time to show off local ingredients or products you’ve discovered.

BEST ADVICE FOR AN ASPIRING CHEF? FOR A HOME COOK?

For a home cook, read recipes carefully and just practice. Don’t get discouraged if you fail… Recipes can be salvaged and turned it into something pretty good half the time. If not… Rinse and repeat, you’ll get it eventually.

WHAT IS YOUR MOTTO?

“I can’t take credit – Julia Child said it best: I like to cook with wine, sometimes I even put it in the food.”
