Dots Mark The Spot This Season

Spring signals lightness of spirit and freshness and the message includes lots of dots. There are few prints so closely associated with flirty fun and youthfulness; occasionally they take on a larger significance, and now is just such a moment. The circles-and-dots-obsessed artist Yayoi Kasuma’s exhibitions are sold-out, perspective-challenging displays of controlled exuberance, and her signature shapes and bright palette are spilling over into fashion this season.

Haider Ackermann’s tailored-yet-breezy coat is a sought-after transition piece and utterly of the moment, with a polka-dot lining. His slip dress, worn with flats, is an easy and relaxed staple look for springtime.

Céline takes classics and pushes them forcefully into the moment by playing with shapes and proportions. The kitten heel is fresh and new, and a tailored shirt travels to sophisticated new territory when its lines are elongated.

Mixed media is of the moment, so blend soft with strict, metal with mesh. Rick Owens shows that sexy has a sweet side but gives the look an edge of cool with a sharp, slick bag.

Maison Margiela updates the classic white shirt by moving it into a luxuriously oversized shape. Ann Demeulemeester exaggerates proportions in a poetic and refreshing way. The flat boot, the anchor to a strong and masculine look, is made feminine and flirtatious as it stretches to thigh high heights.

The current mood is right here, in black and white. Haider Ackermann’s summer dress is the right look for right now, joining the dots that inspired so many of the season’s freshest looks. Rick Owens makes opposites attract in another way, using contrasting stitching to make his mark.

A basic black wardrobe is enlivened with a pop of primary colour. Yellow is a touch of summer sunshine that will nonetheless work overtime, well into night time revelries.

Jump into the new season with a Rick Owens shift and sleek side. This dress is a sleeveless vest, breezy enough for fun but also refined enough to do a day’s work. The slides have the classic Owens cool, androgynous in feeling and a great anchor for an easy summer look.
