LA RIVIERA
Introducing Jacquemus SS19
PHOTOGRAPHY TED BELTON
Simon Porte Jacquemus is undeniably the master of summer. Born and raised in the small town of Mallemort in the South of France, his collections are steeped in memories of those languid months in the country. “I just want to tell something about happiness” he says, recalling his mother coming home from the beach, sun kissed and smiling with sand on her feet, about to get ready for an evening out.

It’s this love of his home - its simplicity and honesty - that seems to keep Jacquemus grounded even through the whirlwind following an impressive breakout collection at the age of twenty-eight last year.

While he was always determined to be a designer, and set out for Paris as soon as he could to do so, he has also been quoted saying that he would just as happily give it all up and return to the farm.
Often inspired by film, Jacquemus is adamant that each collection tell a story, and that story is always French. Last year, he won us over with “La Bomba,” and this season we are transported to the beaches and casinos of “La Riviera”: brightly coloured palettes in barely-there sheer fabrics are draped and cinched in just the right places.
The signature Jacquemus silhouette: a voluminous straw hat against the horizon of the beach. First we see the hat, then the hint of a bronzed leg, or maybe a bare shoulder peeking out from a lightweight knit in a colour that rivals that of the sea. The Jacquemus woman is always making an entrance, even if she isn’t moving at all.

“On the Riviera, you can dress the same to go to the beach as you do the red carpet and that mix is exciting to me”
The glamour of La Dolce Vita meets the bittersweet romance of Call Me By Your Name. “On the Riviera, you can dress the same to go to the beach as you do the red carpet and that mix is exciting to me,” says Jacquemus.

As the hot coastal sun fades into the haze of dusk, slip into a gauzy silk dress, this time the colour of the soon to be glittering night sky. As the warm air picks up the slightest breeze, the soft fabric will flutter around your ankles.
A pair of seemingly simple mules reveal a glimpse of a Picasso-esque sculptural heel as you walk away. It’s like catching the glimpse of a flirtatious smile before you vanish.
